Photographic Magazines are an integral part of the photographic scene, always have been, they chart the scene, the development, the movement, the change, the fluid live nature of Photography. If you really want (today) to develop the visual literacy that is a requirement of being a true photographer of substance then they can play an important part in this development.
The magazines noted here are, again in my estimation some of the best available, that is in the English language.
The list appended here is fluid and will develop, change, and expand. A general critical appraisal of each of the magazines listed here will be posted here over a period of time. Also an appraisal of each issue of each of the magazines I list will also be posted on a regular basis.
If there are magazines that you think I have missed then let me know - connect
Note that my emphasis in this list is on what I call picture magazines not magazines concerned with the technique of photography of which there are many fine examples published both here and in the rest of the world, which I have not listed.
I list 8 picture magazines which from my point of view are Essential Reading if you really want to be aware of the visual photographic scene, The J.S.Scene.
I list 6 “Technique Magazines” which to me are “Essential Reading” if you wish to stay in touch with the general Technical scene.
I list one amateur magazine probably the best in the world.
This is Essential Reading with the others I list if you really want to have a true broad understanding of the scene. If you think you are too advanced or too clever to bother with such a magazine as this. Then you really are advanced indeed, that is well down the road to becoming one of the Elite …….of the Inadequate.
Finally I list 4 magazines which are not photographic magazines as such but which use some of the Finest Photography being produced today in the Advertising, Fashion and Celebrity Fields. Visual Literacy in terms of how Photography is used in some of the major commercial areas.
